Concerning recent developments in the world of Advanced Power Strips (APS), Tier 2 APS was recently added to the Michigan Energy Measures Database (MEMD)for residential applications with a savings value of 307.1 kWh/yr. and a measure life of eight years. The MEMDiis an online, downloadable database accessed from the Michigan Public Service Commission. Their website states, "The Michigan Energy Measures Database (MEMD) was supplied by Morgan Marketing Partners, as a basis for development of initial energy efficiency savings calculations and potential savings for energy efficiency programs.

TIER 1 ADVANCED POWERSTRIP

Tier 1 APS devices are current-sensing units that manage standby power of peripheral devices. Once the user takes action to power down their TV or computer, the Tier 1 devices senses the reduction of energy use in the "control outlet" and cuts power to a number of switched outlets. Tier 1 APS unit can be used in home entertainment or home office residential applications, or they can be used in commercial workspace applications.

TIER 2 ADVANCED POWERSTRIP

By way of comparison, the Tier 2 APS manages both standby power of the peripheral devices as well as active power consumption of the TV in residential applications. The Tier 2 APS device uses an external sensor to monitor user engagement with their TV system paired with a countdown timer. When the external sensor detects a lack of user engagement, the timer starts. If there is no user engagement during the programmable length of the timer period, the Tier 2 APS unit removes power from the TV and switched outlets. Tier 2 APS units have a higher cost than Tier 1 units, but they deliver additional savings.

Michigan is the latest state in the nation to embrace Tier 2 APS as a recognized savings measure for plug-load energy efficiency programs and efforts. MA, PA, OR, ID, WA, CA, and NJ have all established savings values for Tier 2 APS. Other states such as MN, VT, and WI are also looking at Tier 2 APS.
